A hopeful and deeply informed account of how to treasure our humanity in a world increasingly driven by AI.

Respected tech analyst, investor, and philanthropist Esther Dyson offers deep insights and provocative questions about the impact and promise of AI for all aspects of human life.

In the age of AI--an era obsessed with measuring, quantifying, and trading everything--how can we recognize and realize the value of each unique and precious human life? The answer, Dyson tells us in In Defense of Limits, is in good questions: How can we flourish within our limits--of time, scale, and scope--even as we consider what we can share while we're alive and pass along when we leave? Nothing is so good that we need an infinite amount of it forever, nor so bad that we should fail to acknowledge it or to seek to learn from it--not even death.

What are the differences in limits between humans and AI, and what are the implications of those differences? How can we use our own limits to set priorities and leave our singular mark on the world? What role should limits play in formal sectors such as business, government, and philanthropy, where the interplay between power and money corrupts intentions and destroys value?

Observing her own limits, Dyson does not try to explain or predict everything but rather prompts us to ask our own questions and consider our own relationships with AI.

In Defense of Limits makes an urgent argument for prioritizing what matters, and for realizing our own immeasurable value during our finite lives.

《In Defense of Limits》
