Comprising over 170 species, the Anatidae family is distributed worldwide and plays a vital role in maintaining the health of aquatic ecosystems. Ecologically, Anatidae species contribute to nutrient cycling in wetlands. Their feeding behaviors help in controlling aquatic vegetation, preventing overgrowth and maintaining habitat balance for other organisms. Anatidae species also serve as bioindicators, reflecting the health of wetlands, rivers, and lakes. Their sensitivity to environmental changes, such as pollution or habitat destruction, offers insights into broader ecological challenges. The Anatidae family is now facing threats of their survival from habitat destruction, climate change, and overexploitation.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the family Anatidae. It explores their anatomy, physiology, ecological habitats, social behavior, foraging patterns, and migratory adaptations. The book also highlights advances in DNA barcoding and phylogenetic relationships, discusses the global status of Anatidae species, and examines their interactions with humans. Additionally, it addresses diseases affecting these waterbirds, major environmental threats, and contemporary conservation strategies aimed at ensuring the survival and sustainable management of Anatidae diversity worldwide.

It is a useful resource for academics, researchers, and students in zoology, ornithology, ecology, environmental science, and biology. It will also appeal to conservation practitioners, wildlife managers, policymakers, and nongovernmental organizations involved in wetland management, biodiversity conservation, and waterfowl protection initiatives.

Key Features:

  • Explores the entire Anatidae family, including ducks, geese, and swans, detailing their biology, physiology, and distinguishing characteristics.
  • Emphasizes modern conservation challenges and actionable strategies.
  • Features case studies from different continents, and provides a broad understanding of how ecological and environmental factors affect Anatidae species.
  • Includes high-quality illustrations, photographs, and diagrams that aid in understanding the anatomy, behaviors, and habitats of various species.
  • Appeals to both academic audiences and general readers with an interest in wildlife.
