This book presents the issues pertaining to the distributed and renewable energy resource (DER) integration and formulates them from a control system perspective. It then proceeds to discuss controllers that can address them. Various practically significant aspects such as power extraction control of a renewable resource, size selection of its short-term storage component, interactions of a DER with the rest of the electric power system (EPS), weak grid conditions, grid support, inertia response of a DER, power quality aspects pertaining to a DER problem, and ability of the DER to ride through the grid voltage faults and frequency swings, are formulated in terms of transparent control models in this book.
