José M. González-Darder, MD, PhD

Since 2007, Dr. González-Darder has been Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University Clinical Hospital of Valencia and Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at the Department of Surgery at the University of Valencia. The Department of Neurosurgery has full accreditation for resident training. He is the founder and director of the Hands-on Course on Neurosurgical Approaches with 15 editions and other hands-on courses on surgical approaches to the skull and spine. In June 2013 he was accredited as Chairman of Health Sciences at the University by the Ministry of Education of the Government of Spain.

Dr. González-Darder graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the Faculty of Medicine of the Literary University of Valencia in 1977 and completed his training as a neurosurgeon at the Hospital Clínico Universitario of Valencia in 1982. He obtained top honors in the M.D. and Ph.D. degree exams and was admitted as a Member of the Academy of Medicine of Valencia. He spent some stages of training in Hannover and San Francisco.

Between 1982 and 1992, he held the position of Neurosurgeon and Professor of Neurosurgery at the Hospital and Faculty of Medicine of the University of Cádiz, where he was deeply involved in basic and clinical research on deafferentation pain, carrying out experimental studies with animal models of acute and chronic pain and achieving extensive clinical experience in spinal cord stimulation for low back pain, neuropathic pain, and refractory angina pectoris. He was director of Research Group 3080 of the Junta de Andalucía, vice dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and head of the Central Research Service of the University of Cádiz.

In 1992 he moved to Castellón to organize and direct the new Department of Neurosurgery of the General Hospital. For many years he held the position of Professor of Psychobiology in the Department of Basic and Clinical Psychology of the Jaume I University of Castellón. There he developed and patented an original and new integrated cage-plate GD implant for anterior cervical spine fusion.

Current specialized areas of interest include vascular, skull base, and cerebellopontine angle microsurgery for tumor lesions in the field of brain surgery, and cervical and cranio-cervical microsurgery for degenerative, vascular, and tumor lesions in the field of spine surgery.
